Best Practices for Protecting Your Computer and
Personal Information

Your identity, your money, and your personal information could be at risk if your home computer accesses the Internet. If you are unsure of the security features and how to use them, it could result in identity theft or fraud. Here are some best practices to help you keep your computer as safe as possible.

Anti Virus Software
Virus protection software should be installed and updated on a regular basis. Ideally, you should set the updates to run automatically every day.

Email
Do not open files, use hyperlinks or download programs contained in emails received from strangers. Opening a file could expose your system to a virus or spyware, which can capture your passwords or other information as you type. Also, NEVER respond to an email with personal or financial information.

Passwords
Make your passwords hard to guess by using a combination of upper and lower case letters, numbers and symbols. Change your passwords frequently. Do not use the automatic login feature which remembers your username and password.

Firewall
Installing and using firewall software will help protect your computer from internet intruders. It is also best to disconnect from the internet when not in use.

Patches and Security Updates
On a regular basis, download and install the patches and security updates provided by the software vendor.

Internet Browser
Use a secure browser which encrypts the information you send over the internet. Look for the padlock icon on the browser status bar to ensure that your information is being transmitted securely.

Computer Disposal
Before you dispose of or donate your old computer, remember to delete all the personal information stored on it. It is best to use a “wipe” program which will overwrite the entire hard drive.
